Chat answers you in the conversation: you ask, Claude replies, and you take it from there. Cowork takes on a task and works through it, for minutes or hours: it plans, reads and writes files in folders you connect, uses connectors, a browser and even your computer's apps, and hands you a finished spreadsheet, document or deck. Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been merging the two into one Claude for Pro and Max users, so you no longer pick a mode: Claude decides whether your message needs an answer or a task.

What changed in September 2026
On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude." The rollout started with Pro and Max in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile, over several weeks and with nothing to turn on. Team and Free plans follow, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes for their organization.
In the merged app there is one message box. Ask a quick question and you get a quick answer; describe an outcome ("compare these five vendor contracts and give me a table of renewal dates and penalties") and Claude treats it as a task. If a request is unclear, Claude asks. Cowork and Claude Design features are available from any conversation, with your existing context, skills and connectors. The same release added Claude Docs and Claude Slides, in beta on paid plans, so you can edit a document or present a deck Claude made without leaving the app.
On Team plans the merged experience is in beta on web and mobile. On Enterprise, it is off until an admin enables "Chat and Cowork unified (beta)".
What chat is still best at
Chat is the right tool when the answer itself is the product:
- explaining a concept, a clause or an error message
- drafting or editing an email, a post, a short document
- brainstorming, outlining, quick calculations
- a back-and-forth where you steer each step
It is fast, light on your usage limits, and available on every plan.
What Cowork adds
Cowork is for work you would otherwise do yourself across several apps and files. Anthropic describes it as using the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, with no terminal.
- Files: on desktop, it reads and writes files in folders you choose, and can't reach other folders. It needs your explicit permission before permanently deleting anything.
- Deliverables: spreadsheets with working formulas, slide decks, formatted documents.
- Browser and computer: it tries connectors first, then a built-in browser that is separate from yours, and uses your screen only as a last resort, asking before it opens each app.
- Cloud runs: since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud and follow your account across devices. Local files, local connectors, browser use and computer use still need the desktop app open.
- Scheduled tasks: run a task daily, weekly or monthly, for example a Monday summary of last week's sales sheet.
- Plugins: bundles of skills, connectors and sub-agents that also work in chat and Claude Code.
Usage and safety
Tasks cost more than answers. Anthropic notes that multi-step tasks use more of your usage limit than quick questions, and that Auto mode uses even more. If you hit limits often, keep quick questions short and save tasks for work that would take you real time.
Cowork has three approval modes. Manual, the default in the merged app, asks before actions. Auto keeps working while a safety check reviews each action and blocks unsafe ones. Skip acts without asking and nothing checks it, so keep it for folders and tasks where a mistake is cheap. Treat web pages and files from others as untrusted; the help center lists the risks that come with an agent that has internet access.
Which to use
- "What does this error mean?" Chat.
- "Rewrite this paragraph to be shorter." Chat.
- "Go through the 40 PDFs in this folder and build a spreadsheet of totals by vendor." Cowork.
- "Every Monday, pull last week's numbers and update the deck." Cowork, as a scheduled task.
- "Fix the failing test in our repo." Neither: that is a job for Claude Code. See Claude Cowork vs Claude Code and Claude vs Claude Code.
- You want an always-on assistant you message from WhatsApp or Telegram: that is a different kind of tool; see OpenClaw vs Claude Code.
Questions
Is Cowork available on the free plan?
No. Cowork is for paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise). Free users have chat, and Anthropic says the merged experience will reach Team and Free plans after Pro and Max.
Do I still choose between chat and Cowork?
Not in the merged app. Since September 16, 2026, Pro and Max users are getting one message box, and Claude decides whether a request needs a quick answer or a longer task. Team and Enterprise get it later, in beta or when an admin turns it on.
Does Cowork use more of my usage limit than chat?
Yes. Anthropic says Cowork tasks use limits faster than chat because they take many steps, and that Auto approval mode uses even more.
Can Cowork keep working after I close my laptop?
On Pro and Max, yes: since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks run in the cloud. Local files, the built-in browser and computer use still need the desktop app open on your computer.
