Asana MCP and Claude skills

Pull overdue tasks, project status updates and completed work from Asana, and report who is behind and which projects are at risk.

Connect Asana to your agent (MCP)

  1. Asana MCP server, Asana's official remote server at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp, signed in with OAuth. Asana also offers an Asana app for Claude; the older beta endpoint (/sse) is deprecated (docs).
  2. API with a personal access token. Create one in the Asana developer console, store it in ASANA_ACCESS_TOKEN with ASANA_WORKSPACE_GID, and send it as a Bearer token.
  3. OAuth app. For a shared or unattended setup, an OAuth app can request narrower scopes such as tasks:read and projects:read.

A personal access token carries all of your Asana permissions, so for scheduled runs use read-scoped OAuth or a separate account with comment-only access to the projects in the report.

What agents do with Asana

Asana's REST API (https://app.asana.com/api/1.0) is built around tasks, projects, sections, portfolios, goals and custom fields. Reports read tasks per project (GET /projects/{gid}/tasks) or across a workspace with the search endpoint (GET /workspaces/{gid}/tasks/search, paid plans only), using filters like completed=false, due_on.before, assignee.any and modified_at.after. Project status updates (GET /status_updates?parent={project_gid}) carry a status_type such as on_track, at_risk or off_track and the text the owner wrote, while custom fields hold priority, estimates or whatever else the team tracks.

Managers usually schedule overdue tasks by assignee, tasks completed this week per project, a roll-up of project statuses for a portfolio, and a list of projects whose owners haven't posted an update in two weeks.
