Discord MCP and Claude skills
Read messages and threads in chosen Discord channels with a bot, and report questions nobody answered, busy threads and what the community asked this week.
Connect Discord to your agent (MCP)
- MCP server. Discord doesn't publish an official one. Community MCP servers exist and run on your own bot token; many include sending and moderation tools, so read what a server can do before you hand it a token.
- REST API with a bot. Create an application in the Discord Developer Portal, add a bot, turn on the Message Content intent, and invite the bot to your server with only the View Channels and Read Message History permissions. Store its token in
DISCORD_BOT_TOKENand send it asAuthorization: Bot <token>; the skill also readsDISCORD_CHANNEL_IDS, the channels to watch.
Keep the bot out of every channel the report doesn't cover with channel permission overrides, and leave out Send Messages unless you want it to post the digest back into Discord.

What agents do with Discord
Agents read Discord through its REST API with a bot token. GET /channels/{channel.id}/messages returns up to 100 messages per call and pages with before or after a message ID; IDs are snowflakes, so they also encode when a message was sent. Each message has author, content, timestamp, mentions, reactions, message_reference for replies, and a thread when one was started from it. Forum posts and threads are channels too: GET /guilds/{guild.id}/threads/active lists open threads, and a thread's message_count shows whether anyone replied. Reading content needs the privileged Message Content intent, switched on in the Developer Portal; apps in 100 or more servers must be verified and get the intent approved.
Community and support teams schedule a list of questions in help channels and forum posts with no reply after a few hours, a daily digest of the busiest threads, the most-reacted messages of the week, and questions that keep coming back.
