Google Sheets MCP and Claude skills

Read KPI tables, trackers and budgets from Google Sheets, or append a row on each run, so a spreadsheet becomes the source or the history of a report.

Connect Google Sheets to your agent (MCP)

  1. Google Sheets MCP server, Google's remote server at https://sheetsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1, part of the Google Workspace MCP servers in developer preview, with read-only spreadsheets.readonly and drive.readonly scopes available (setup).
  2. Claude's Google Drive connector searches and opens files in your Drive, which is enough to find a sheet and read it in a chat.
  3. Sheets API with a service account. Enable the Google Sheets API, create a service account, share the spreadsheet with its email, and set GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS and SHEET_ID (the long ID in the sheet's URL). Use the spreadsheets.readonly scope unless the skill appends rows.

Share the sheet with the service account as Viewer unless the skill writes; it can only open files someone shared with it, so the rest of your Drive stays out of reach.

What agents do with Google Sheets

The Sheets API reads ranges in A1 notation with spreadsheets.values.get ('Weekly KPIs'!A1:H60) or several at once with values.batchGet, and spreadsheets.get lists the tabs and their sizes. valueRenderOption decides whether you get formatted text, raw values or formulas, which matters for currency and percentage cells. spreadsheets.values.append adds a row under the last one in a table.

Spreadsheets show up in skills two ways. As a source: the KPI sheet a team fills in by hand, a budget against actuals, a content calendar, a list of accounts to watch. As history: the skill appends this week's number to a log tab, so the next run has something to compare against.
