Obsidian MCP and Claude skills
Read your Obsidian vault, daily notes, open tasks and properties, and post a weekly review or a list of overdue tasks straight from the Markdown files.
Connect Obsidian to your agent (MCP)
- Point the agent at the vault. No server is needed. Start Claude Code in the vault folder, or add it to a session with
claude --add-dir ~/Obsidian/Vault; Codex and Cursor work the same way when opened in the folder. mcp-obsidian, which talks to the Local REST API community plugin with anOBSIDIAN_API_KEY; it includes tools that append to, patch and delete notes, so check what a server can do before you connect it.
A report only needs to read the vault: in Claude Code, add deny rules for Edit and Write on the vault path, or point the skill at a synced read-only copy.

What agents do with Obsidian
An Obsidian vault is a folder of Markdown files, so an agent reads it like any other folder. Notes carry YAML frontmatter that Obsidian shows as properties (status, due, tags, created), tasks are - [ ] and - [x] lines, links are [[wikilinks]], and daily notes usually sit in a folder such as Daily/2026-10-17.md. Bases (.base files) and canvases (.canvas, in the JSON Canvas format) are plain text too. grep, find and a short script answer most questions: open tasks due before today, notes changed this week, files waiting in an inbox folder, notes nothing links to.
People schedule a weekly review drawn from the last seven daily notes, a morning list of open and overdue tasks across the vault, a count of unprocessed notes in the inbox, and a digest of the meeting notes written this week.
