Slack MCP and Claude skills
Read channels, threads and mentions in Slack, and post a digest of what was decided, which questions went unanswered and what needs you.
Connect Slack to your agent (MCP)
- Slack MCP server, Slack's official remote server at
https://mcp.slack.com/mcp. It only works through Slack apps that Slack has registered, so use the Slack connector in Claude or another approved client, and your workspace admin may need to approve it (docs). It searches messages and files, reads channels and threads, and can send messages. - Web API with your own app. Create an internal app at api.slack.com/apps, install it to the workspace, and store its token in
SLACK_BOT_TOKEN(xoxb-) orSLACK_USER_TOKEN(xoxp-). Read scopes:channels:history, channels:read, groups:historyfor private channels, users:read, andsearch:read(user tokens only) for search. A bot reads only the channels it was invited to.
Leave out chat:write unless the skill should post back into Slack; with history and read scopes alone, the app can't post anything.

Slack channel digest
Every weekday morning: what happened in a busy Slack channel since this time yesterday, threads included, boiled down to decisions, open questions and links.
Product managersWeekdays at 8:30Report cardUses Slack.Slack incident summary
Every 30 minutes during an incident: the incident channel boiled down to status, customer impact, a timeline and the follow-ups for the postmortem.
DevelopersEvery 30 minutesReport cardUses Slack. What agents do with Slack
Agents read Slack with conversations.history (a channel's messages since an oldest timestamp), conversations.replies (one thread), conversations.list and users.info to turn IDs into names. search.messages takes the same modifiers as Slack's search box, such as in:#support after:2026-10-14 or from:@dana. Each message carries ts, user, text, thread_ts, reply_count and reactions, which is enough to tell a settled question from an unanswered one.
What people schedule: a morning digest of busy channels, questions in a help or support channel with no reply after a few hours, mentions and DMs you haven't answered, and a weekly summary of decisions made in a project channel.
