Connect Semrush to your agent (MCP)
- Semrush MCP, Semrush's official remote server at
https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp. In Claude it is the Semrush app under connectors; in other agents add the URL and sign in with OAuth, or sendAuthorization: Apikey <key>where OAuth isn't supported (docs). - API with a key. Store the key in
SEMRUSH_API_KEYand call the SEO API, for examplehttps://api.semrush.com/?type=domain_organic&domain=example.com&database=us&display_limit=100&key=.... Some plans include 50,000 API units; larger unit packages are sold separately.
Semrush MCP reads Projects API data but can't create or change projects, which keeps Position Tracking and Site Audit settings out of the agent's reach.

What agents do with Semrush
The Semrush SEO API returns domain reports per regional database (database=us, uk and so on): domain_ranks for organic traffic and keyword counts, and domain_organic for the keywords a domain ranks for, with position, search volume and the ranking URL. The Backlinks API covers backlinks, referring domains and Authority Score. The Projects API exposes your Position Tracking and Site Audit projects, and the Trends API, a separate subscription, adds traffic and market data for competitors.
Common uses are a weekly ranking report from Position Tracking, a competitor gap check (keywords a rival ranks for and you don't), Site Audit health over time, and backlink gains and losses. Requests cost API units per line returned, so a skill sets display_limit and asks for only the columns it needs.
