DataForSEO MCP and Claude skills

Pull live Google results, search volumes, competitor rankings, backlinks and AI answer mentions from DataForSEO, pay per call, and post what changed in your search market.

Connect DataForSEO to your agent (MCP)

  1. DataForSEO MCP server, DataForSEO's own. Run it locally with npx dataforseo-mcp-server and set DATAFORSEO_USERNAME and DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD to your API login and API password (Dashboard > API Access); add http to the command for clients that want a local HTTP server. A hosted server runs at https://mcp.dataforseo.com/mcp for clients that can send a Basic authorization header. You can turn off the modules a skill doesn't use to keep the tool list short (setup guide).
  2. REST API with Basic auth. Store the same pair in DATAFORSEO_LOGIN and DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD and call the endpoints with curl -u "$DATAFORSEO_LOGIN:$DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD". The free sandbox at https://sandbox.dataforseo.com/v3/ returns sample data at no cost, which is the place to test a skill before it spends money.

The API password can spend your balance but cannot sign in to the dashboard or change billing. Set a low balance alert in the dashboard, and give each skill a fixed keyword list and depth so a run costs the same every time.

What agents do with DataForSEO

DataForSEO sells raw search data by the request through a REST API at https://api.dataforseo.com/v3/, with HTTP Basic auth (your API login and API password, not the dashboard password). The parts agents use most:

  • SERP API: the live Google results page for a keyword, location and language (/v3/serp/google/organic/live/advanced), with every item typed: organic, featured_snippet, people_also_ask, ai_overview and more. The Standard queue (task_post, then tasks_ready and task_get) costs less than Live and returns within minutes.
  • Keywords Data API: Google Ads search volume, CPC and competition for up to 1,000 keywords a task (/v3/keywords_data/google_ads/search_volume/live).
  • DataForSEO Labs: its own keyword database, so you can see any domain's rankings without owning it: ranked_keywords, domain_intersection (keywords two domains share or one has and the other lacks), competitors_domain, keyword_overview and historical_rank_overview.
  • Backlinks API: referring domains, new and lost links and the link gap between domains (/v3/backlinks/referring_domains/live, /v3/backlinks/domain_intersection/live).
  • AI Optimization API: how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer a prompt (LLM Responses and LLM Scraper) and where a brand or domain is mentioned in AI answers (LLM Mentions, for example /v3/ai_optimization/llm_mentions/search_mentions/live).

It is pay as you go with a $50 minimum top-up and no subscription (the Backlinks API alone asks for a $100 monthly top-up, which stays on the balance for any API); a SERP costs from fractions of a cent, a Labs request about a cent plus a little per row. Every response carries a cost field, so a skill can report what its own run cost. Its data is strongest joined with your own: Search Console says what you rank for and get clicks from, DataForSEO says how big each query is and who else is on the page.
