Google Analytics MCP and Claude skills

Pull sessions, users, key events and revenue from GA4 by channel and landing page, and post the week-over-week changes that matter.

Connect Google Analytics to your agent (MCP)

  1. Google Analytics MCP server, Google's own open-source server (analytics-mcp on PyPI, source). It runs locally with pipx run analytics-mcp, offers run_report, run_realtime_report and get_account_summaries, and Google labels it experimental.
  2. Data API with a service account. Enable the Google Analytics Data API in a Google Cloud project, create a service account, add its email as a Viewer on the GA4 property, and point GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS at its JSON key. The skill also reads GA4_PROPERTY_ID.
  3. Your own Google login. gcloud auth application-default login --scopes https://www.googleapis.com/auth/analytics.readonly,https://www.googleapis.com/auth/cloud-platform --client-id-file=client.json gives the MCP server or a script your user's access without a key file.

Request only analytics.readonly and keep the service account at Viewer: none of these reports needs Editor.

What agents do with Google Analytics

Agents read GA4 through the Analytics Data API's runReport, which takes a property (properties/123456789), a date range and lists of dimensions and metrics. The dimensions that carry most reports are date, sessionDefaultChannelGroup, sessionSourceMedium, landingPagePlusQueryString, deviceCategory and country; the metrics are sessions, activeUsers, newUsers, engagementRate, keyEvents (what GA4 called conversions until 2024), totalRevenue and purchaseRevenue. runRealtimeReport covers the last 30 minutes, and runFunnelReport (v1alpha) handles step-by-step funnels.

From those calls people build a weekly traffic report by channel against the week before, a list of landing pages that lost sessions, key events and revenue by source, and a daily check that tracking still fires. Recent days can still change while GA4 processes them, so most skills report on full days that ended at least 48 hours ago.
