An SEO report shows how a site performed in organic search over a period: clicks, impressions and rankings from Google Search Console, organic sessions and conversions from analytics, the pages and queries that moved, technical problems, and what to do next. The template below fits on one page, works weekly or monthly, and every number in it comes from free Google tools. A filled-in example follows.
The SEO report template
## SEO report: [site], [period] **Summary:** [Two sentences on what changed and why. One line on this period's priority.] ### Headline numbers | Measure | This period | Previous period | Change | Same period last year | |--------------------------|------------:|----------------:|-------:|----------------------:| | Google clicks | | | | | | Google impressions | | | | | | Average CTR | | | | | | Average position | | | | | | Organic sessions (GA4) | | | | | | Organic key events (GA4) | | | | | ### Pages that moved | Page | Clicks | Change | Organic sessions | Key events | Why | |------|-------:|-------:|-----------------:|-----------:|-----| ### Queries that moved | Query | Clicks | Change | Position | Position change | |-------|-------:|-------:|---------:|----------------:| ### Opportunities | Query or page | Position | Impressions | CTR | Action | |---------------|---------:|------------:|----:|--------| ### Technical - Indexed pages: [number], change: [number] - New indexing issues: [pages and reasons] - Core Web Vitals: [good / needs improvement / poor URL counts] ### Backlinks (monthly) - New referring domains: [number]. Lost: [number]. ### Work done and next steps - [What shipped, and what it should move]
Weekly vs monthly SEO report format
- Weekly: the headline numbers, the top five pages and queries that moved, and anything broken, compared with the previous seven days. Use it to catch drops early, not to judge strategy; weekly numbers are noisy.
- Monthly: the full template, compared with the previous month and with the same month last year, since seasonality distorts month-over-month changes. Add opportunities, backlinks and the work done. This is the version for clients and leadership.
Search Console data lags about two days, so a weekly report covers the seven full days that ended two days before you write it.
SEO report example
SEO report: example.com, October 5 to 11, 2026.
Summary: Google clicks rose 6%, driven by a how-to guide and two templates. The pricing page lost 19% of its clicks, and it brings in the most organic key events, so it comes first this week.
| Measure | This week | Previous week | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google clicks | 4,960 | 4,680 | +6.0% |
| Google impressions | 182,400 | 171,900 | +6.1% |
| Average CTR | 2.7% | 2.7% | 0 |
| Average position | 11.2 | 11.5 | 0.3 better |
| Organic sessions | 6,120 | 5,880 | +4.1% |
| Organic key events | 188 | 172 | +9.3% |
| Page | Clicks | Change | Organic sessions | Key events |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /templates/invoice-pdf | 1,310 | +14% | 1,540 | 22 |
| /blog/how-to-write-an-invoice | 620 | +38% | 760 | 9 |
| /templates/receipt | 190 | +212% | 230 | 4 |
| /blog/best-invoicing-software | 240 | -31% | 300 | 14 |
| /pricing | 280 | -19% | 410 | 51 |
Opportunity: "invoice template word" ranks at position 9.4 with 12,300 impressions and a 1.1% CTR. A title that names Word and Google Docs could move it onto the first page.
Next: find out why /pricing dropped (lost rankings, a competitor's new page, or a title change), then refresh the invoicing software comparison, which lost 31% of its clicks.
Google Sheets and Looker Studio versions
- Google Sheets: one tab per section of the template, and one row per period on the headline tab, so the trend builds up over time. Fill it from the Search Console Performance report export, or have a script or agent append rows through the Sheets API.
- Looker Studio, which Google now calls Data Studio: add the Search Console and Google Analytics connectors as data sources. Search Console offers two tables, Site Impression and URL Impression, and one data source can use only one of them, so add the connector twice when you want both.
Fill it automatically
Every headline number comes from two APIs: Search Console's searchanalytics.query (clicks, impressions, CTR and position by query, page or date) and the GA4 Data API's runReport, filtered to the Organic Search channel. An agent can pull both, match Search Console pages to GA4 landing pages, and write the summary:
- Weekly SEO report: Search Console and GA4 does the weekly version every Monday, with the pages that moved and the ones at risk.
- Search Console striking distance keywords fills the opportunities table with queries ranking 8 to 20 that have real impressions.
- GA4 monthly traffic report covers last month against the month before and the same month last year.
Or give your agent the template:
From Search Console and GA4, for the 7 days ending 2 days ago and the 7 days before: fill in this SEO report template: [paste it]. Use searchanalytics.query by page and by query, and GA4 runReport on landingPagePlusQueryString filtered to Organic Search. List the 5 pages and 5 queries that moved most, 3 queries in positions 8 to 20 with the most impressions, and one priority for this week.
Each skill posts its report to your Briefkin board as a card, so Monday's SEO numbers are waiting before the team meeting.
Questions
What is an SEO report?
A regular summary of a site's organic search performance: traffic and rankings from Search Console, what organic visitors did from analytics, technical problems, and the actions planned. Agencies send them to clients; in-house teams use them to decide what to work on next.
What should a monthly SEO report include?
Clicks, impressions, CTR and position against the previous month and the same month last year, organic sessions and conversions, the pages and queries that moved most, technical issues, backlinks, and the work done and planned.
Why don't Search Console clicks match GA4 organic sessions?
Search Console counts Google clicks only, while GA4's Organic Search channel includes Bing and other engines, and GA4 misses visitors who decline analytics cookies. Track the trend in each rather than the gap between them.
Do I need paid tools for an SEO report?
No. Search Console and GA4 cover traffic, rankings for your own queries and conversions. Paid tools such as Ahrefs or Semrush add competitor data and backlink tracking.
